Wyoming PBS is the hub for the people’s alert system in Wyoming
Wyoming PBS is not just your local public TV station—it plays an essential role in the state’s emergency response system to the people.
When a crisis happens, emergency personnel at different levels—federal, state, and local—work together to get the word out. FEMA handles national alerts, while the Wyoming Office of Homeland Security sends out state-level alerts like Amber Alerts, weather warnings, and wildfire updates. Local agencies manage emergencies within communities, such as evacuations or hazardous spills.
These alerts are broadcast through the Emergency Alert System. WY PBS ensures these alerts reach everyone, including those in remote areas like ranches and mountain cabins. First responders use a special radio network (WyoLink), while the rest of us hear about emergencies through TV and radio broadcasts.
These services are part of WY PBS’s commitment to strengthening the safety of all our communities.
PBS WARN
PBS WARN (Warning, Alert, Response Network) uses PBS's unique reach, reliability, and local connections across America to provide a vital backup path for the WEA system, which allows local, state, and national government agencies (like FEMA) to instantly send short message warnings from geo-targeted cell phone towers directly to a nearby user's mobile device.
Please visit the PBS Warn website to learn more.
Emergency Alerting System
WY PBS receives and sends alerts for the National Weather Service over our statewide network. Each NWS office with county warning responsibilities in Wyoming will provide EAS (Emergency Alerting System) activation for specific weather alert messages.
Local-Level EAS messages are sent out over the WY PBS network utilizing IPAWS (Integrated Public Alert & Warning System). For Operational Area Emergency situations involving local areas, authorities at the county emergency operation center (EOC) will issue EAS activation through the LP1 and LP2 stations serving the affected EAS local Operation Area.
Coverage
WY PBS currently serves the State of Wyoming with three high power transmitters and 47 translators, providing statewide coverage through over-the-air, satellite, cable, and live stream.
