Arthur notices that the hospital cleaner, Edie McClure (Denise Welch), has been neglecting her duties of late and wonders what has happened. Edie has been sneaking around the village, desperate to avoid Arthur. Meanwhile, Tom is learning of the idiosyncratic way Arthur has been running the surgery and puts his foot down, imposing new rules and regulations much to Arthur’s amusement. Deborah has a run-in with Edie, who arrives unannounced to
clean the Gilders’ house. She objects to Edie’s brusque and bossy manner and the two women soon clash over who will run the doctor’s house.

When Arthur finally catches up with Edie, he is furious to learn that she is pregnant again, despite his strict warnings. She has rheumatic heart disease and another pregnancy poses a real threat to her life. She has six children already, all girls, and is desperate to have another child, a boy, to take over her husband Don’s (Paul Bown) business. Edie turns to her family for support and is furious when she discovers that her eldest daughter has been having secret meetings with her sister, Phyllis.

Meanwhile, village mechanic Eddie finally plucks up the courage to ask Helen Gilder out on a date, but accidentally asks Jean too. And the local vicar, Reverend Brewer, is learning to drive, but has a serious collision when he drives too fast through the narrow village lanes.
